9/9/1812The first paper currency was issued by the Bank of Bengal. The notes of this bank were later printed by Perkins, Heath & Co. in England. They can be distinguished into at least 10 different types. They were issued in a wide range of denominations from Rs. 10 to Rs. 1000.

Sanjeevan, weekly from Calcutta, also raised the motto to boycott British Goods.

11/1/1996K.L. Chugh and J.N. Sapru, former chairmen of ITC, remanded to custody in connection with FERA violation case.
2/4/1974Satyendra Nath Bose, a noted mathematician, professor and physicist, passed away at Calcutta. He contributed greatly to statictical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, the therories of X-ray crystallography and thermoluminescence, and unified field theory. Bose instituted ""Planck's Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quana"" in 1924.
