We always praise creativity and have a high regards for creative people.. however, do you think that Creative people Cheat? well, the study findings suggest so.
Creative thinkers or people with creative minds are more prone to cheat in compare to less creative- study. The creative people who are original thinker possess ability to rationalise, their actions- says researchers of Harvard and Duke University.
"The study findings suggest that people who are creative or work in environments that promote creative thinking may be the most at risk when they face ethical dilemmas."- noted researchers.
To understand and know whether creative people would cheat to justify their dishonesty in certain situation, the researchers conducted five experiments.
Study
As a part of study, all participants' creativity and intelligence were tested before giving them a task. Participants were given a small amount of money just for showing up. In each experiments they were given tasks to get more paid, and were allowed to take advantages of the opportunities for cheating. The chances to cheat were purposely staged by the researchers, but the participants didn''t know that.
Findings
Findings suggest that at more creative people were much more likely to cheat and that there was no link between intelligence and dishonesty. For example, more intelligent but less creative people were not more likely to cheat.
Researcher's view and Explanation
"Greater creativity helps individuals solve difficult tasks across many domains, but creative sparks may lead individuals to take unethical routes when searching for solutions to problems and tasks," lead researcher Francesca Gino of Harvard University said in a journal news release.
"Dishonesty and innovation are two of the topics most widely written about in the popular press," the researchers wrote. "Yet, to date, the relationship between creativity and dishonest behavior has not been studied empirically.
The findings appear online in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
