6/2/1953Mountaineer Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and his Nepalese Sherpa guide Tensing became the first men to conquer Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain. The two reached the pinnacle of Everest, more than 29,000 feet above sea level, at 11.30 a.m.
6/2/1953Mian Tansen, a prominent figure of North Indian (Hindustani) classical music and famous singer of Akbar's court, died at Gwalior. Tansen is remembered for his epic Dhrupad compositions, creating several new ragas, as well as for writing two classic books on music Sri Ganesh Stotra and Sangita Sara.
